Personal

Laverna worked as an RN for 20 years before becoming a therapist, graduating with her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University. Thirteen of those years were as a hospice nurse, so end of life care and grief counseling has been a big part of her life. She incorporates her medical background in the therapy process. It was during those years as a nurse when she realized how each of the systems of the body can interfere or assist in the healing process.

Laverna’s priority is her Christian faith. She has found truth stabilizes her when unexpected events have changed her life.

When Laverna is not working, she is always open to new adventures. She is always planning her next road trip. She has a passion for traveling and exploring new places and cultures. But she is also happy staying at home, reading from her large collection of books, watching movies, or working in her yard.

Professional Disclosure Statement

I graduated with a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, with a certificate in Trauma Therapy. My experience includes working with couples, families, college students, and children from age 8 to 18. I provide premarital counseling, marriage therapy, sex therapy, and individual therapy. I have worked with anxiety, depression, grief, complex trauma, adoption issues, adjustment disorders, and spiritual abuse.

My therapy style involves understanding the client from their point of view. I work from a holistic view, believing all systems of the body; physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual, help in the healing process. I utilize many different therapy ideas because everyone is unique. I use emotionally focused therapy, family systems, and Gottman Method in marriage therapy, and have found together they are very successful in transforming relationships.

Other therapies that I use is narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. I practice mindfulness daily and want to help clients realize its amazing benefits.

I have a passion for trauma therapy believing there is no trauma little or complex that cannot be transformed with therapy. After training in the use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Processing) I have found it can be utilized not only with trauma, but other distresses in life.  What once would take years to heal, now EMDR can alleviate distress fairly quickly. EMDR therapy research shows that the mind can heal from psychological trauma in the same way the body recovers from physical trauma.

I want to hear your story, simple or complicated, and then journey with you toward healing.
